Western Canadian Championships Kick Off by InsidePOOL Staff The first event of the 2003 season for the International Billiard Council kicked off, one of twelve events the IBC will have this year, in addition to their final championship. A full field of 128 international players arrived at The Olympic Oval and Great White Billiards, both located in Calgary, Alberta, all competing for the grand prize of $10,000 for first place. Some of the more interesting first round results are as follows: Jimmy Wych d. Joanne Ashton 11-6 Ismael "Morro" Paez d. Robert Caliou 11-2 Ralf Souquet d. Greg Cairns 11-0 Nick Kruger d. Gary Austin 11-1 Mike Massey d. Ernesto Dominguez 11-4 Edwin Montal d. Bill Thompson 11-7 Johnny Archer d. David Martin 11-5 Fabian Louison d. Earl Strickland 11-7 Chris Almond d. Art Wiggins 11-7 Paul Potier d. Brady Gollan 11-9 Earl "The Pearl" Strickland (pictured) was forced to sit in his chair and watch his opponent, Fabian Louison, as he make some difficult shots and got a little lucky as well. After playing safe on the 2 ball, Strickland was disappointed to see Louison kick and make the 2, ultimately sending Strickland to the one-loss side of the bracket.
