WPBA Qualifier Won by Van Buren By InsidePOOL Staff Florida resident Ellen Van Buren made the long trip to Clifton, NJ, for the J. Pechauer Northeast Women's Tour stop at Clifton Billiards. The April 16-17 event drew a charged field of veterans and newcomers, all vying for the WPBA qualifier, but none could dethrone Van Buren, who earned the victory. Van Buren's undefeated weekend started with wins over Sandra Pereira, Dawn Fox, and Hollie Burk, before coming out on top of a tough hill-hill battle over Gina Kim-Lipsky to earn the hot seat. Kim-Lipsky, too, had been on a roll defeating Liz Schwartzreich and Barbara Stock before taking the trip to the left side. In the semifinals, Kim-Lipsky again faced 2003 JPNEWT player of the year Schwartzreich, who, for the third straight match, staved off elimination with a 7-5 win to reach the finals. The race-to-9 final match was close right to the end, as Schwartzreich and Van Buren traded games back and forth. Down 8-7, Schwartzreich took advantage of a three-foul by her opponent to put the match at hill-hill. In the decisive game, Van Buren made a desperate but successful kick shot attempt at the 1 ball, and she took the match 9-8.
