Default Solving common light control problems

Most problems can be avoided simply by following the instructions in the initial setup. Please, follow the recommendations found in the help file in Billiard Business Solutions. Look for the light control diagram in this help file for further details.

Connect lights and computer control modules to the same phase

But in general, make sure that all the lights you wish to control are using the same phase of electricity. And make sure that your computer control module (X10's CM11, CM15a, CP290, or Insteon's 2414U) is directly plugged into a socket that goes directly to one of the circuit breakers that the lights are using. This insures that the power line signals uses the same phase as the lights.

Most buildings have 2 phases of 110V AC electric; some commercial buildings have three. Thus, if you're not familiar with the concept of phases in electricity, you could hook up your lights on a phase different from the phase that the computer control module is using. In this situation, your light controller most likely would fail to transmit the power line signal to the light control modules.

Use noise filters to filter out offending signals

Another common problem is electric line noise caused by computer equipment. To avoid this problem you should do two things: (1) purchase a specially made line noise filter to filter out unwanted line noise. Plug this filter directly into the socket and then plug your power strip used for your computer equipment into this filter; and (2), plug your computer equipment into a phase different from the phase being used by the lights and computer module.

Use a systematic approach to isolate the offending device.

Sometimes certain electrical devices break up the power line signal. In your breaker box turn off 1 circuit breaker at a time. Test the lights. If the lights start working, you've isolated the general area of the problem. Next turn the breaker back on and unplug the devices connected to that breaker one at a time. Test the lights. If the lights work after you've physically unplugged a device (you must unplug it, not just turn it off), you've isolated the specific device. Purchase a line noise filter for this device and plug the device into the filter and the filter into the plug.
