A strong field of 25 women showed up to compete in the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour’s July 19-20 stop at Kolby’s Korner Pocket in Tempe, AZ. This event was a $500-added WPBA qualifier presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues. The qualifier, which was for a paid spot in the Carolina Classic, was captured by Nicole Keeney, while the first-place spot went to Nina Tagley.
Sunday’s A-side matches started off with Keeney versus Kathleen Lawless and Samm Diep against Michelle Abernathy. Keeney and Diep won their matches and both advanced to the hot seat match, which Keeney won 7-4.
Meanwhile, Liz Bernreuter and Tagley dropped Trinh Lu and Susan Mello into seventh place, respectively. Tagley went on to oust Michelle Abernathy, while Kathleen Lawless sent home Bernreuter in a fifth-place tie with Abernathy. In the quarterfinal match, Tagley came out victorious against Lawless and went on to challenge Diep in the semifinals. Tagley was on a roll and advanced again to play Keeney in the finals.
Keeney had already won the WPBA qualifier spot going into the finals, so it was the money and pride being played for at this point. The final match started with Keeney winning the lag. Since this was a true double-elimination format, Tagley had to defeat Keeney in two races to 7. In a matter of just a few minutes, Tagley was up 3-1. She dominated the match, winning the first set 7-3 and the second set, again, 7-3.

Norway’s Line Kjorsvik turned away a field of 33 at the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour’s February 9-10 stop to take first place. This $500-added event was hosted by Metro Sportz Bar and also dangled a WPBA qualifier, presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues, for the upcoming San Diego Classic.
The top eight emerged and the first matches called on Sunday were Kristin Haney versus Susan Mello and Edwidge Cavanna against Kjorsvik all playing on the A-side. The B-side started with Holly Sholes versus Susan Wilbur and Susan Williams playing Justine Bishop.
The hot seat match was between Kristin Haney and Kjorsvik, with the Norway native dealing Haney a 7-0 donut. Haney went on to play Justine Bishop in the semifinal match, but again Haney was turned away when Bishop took the match 7-5.
With Haney eliminated from the tournament, Kjorsvik won the qualifier spot before she even had to play the final match.
Bishop went on to play Kjorsvik in the final match. Since it was a true double-elimination event, Bishop needed to defeat her opponent in two sets of a race to 4. As with all of her other matches, Kjorsvik dominated the match and won with a score of 7-1.

Kristin Haney and Mello went head to head for the hot seat match. Mello got to the hill first and won the match 7-4. Haney went on to play Sholes in the semifinal match. A Hand for Haney

Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour / Prescott, AZ

Out of a field of 25 ladies, Susan Mello earned the top spot on the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour’s June 9-10 at On the Snap in Prescott, AZ. Not only did she take home first place, she scored a WPBA qualifier, presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues, to the Florida Classic held later in June.
The top eight ladies came back to play on Sunday, and Mello and Holly Sholes both won their first matches of the day and met up for the hot seat match. As expected, it was close: Sholes made it to the hill first with the score 6-5 then quickly won the next game.

Mello went on to play Kristin Haney for third place. After the tenth rack, the match was tied at 5. Haney put together some great runs, won the last two games, and won 7-5.
After a really long day with many long matches, Sholes finally had an opponent. Since this was a true double-elimination format, Haney had to beat Sholes in two races to 7. The match started off rough for both girls, but Haney easily won 7-2.
Haney won the lag and snapped the 9 on the very first break of the second set, and Sholes ended up with an easy 1-9 combo in the next to make it 1-all. The match progressed in that vein until it seesawed to double-hill. Though Sholes played a strong safety on the 7 ball, Haney kicked at and contacted the 7 but didn’t drop it. But Sholes made a fatal error in missing the last 9 ball, handing the match to Haney.

Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour / Glendale, AZ

The Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour afforded its members a chance to warm up for the BCA Nationals in Las Vegas, NV, the weekend of April 28-29. They held an event at Northern Lounge in Glendale, AZ, that attracted 35 ladies, with Susan Mello coming out ahead of them all.
Susan Williams and Susan Mello made it all the way through the winners’-side bracket and met up for the hot seat match. Mello came out victorious and waited patiently as Williams went on to play Michelle Trevino.
After Williams defeated Trevino, she went on to the rematch against Mello. In the true double-elimination format, Williams had to defeat Mello twice to win. An outstanding run of the stripes gave Williams the first game but was overshadowed by Mello, who captured the next four racks in a row to win the first set 4-1.
AWBT would like to thank Northern Lounge for having them. Their next stop, which will be a WPBA qualifier, will be held at On the Snap in Prescott. Dates are June 9-10. Dont’ Forget - the tournament will start at 11a.m. and sign-ups will close at 10:30 a.m. sharp.
