Parke Takes Home Billiards Title Pechauer All-American Tour / Decatur, IL by InsidePOOL Staff Larry Parke took home first place on the April 19 stop of the Pechauer All-American Tour. Hosted by Brickhouse in Decatur, IL, this $500-added event drew a full 32-player field in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes. In the hot seat match, Parke outmaneuvered Max Stortzum 5-2. Earlier, in the A-bracket semifinals, Parke turned back Larry Miller 5-2, while Stortzum outgunned Craig Hauck 5-2. In the B-side round of 8, Mike Green eliminated Mike Durbin at seventh place, while Dave Carr also exited at seventh place via a loss to Josh Johnson 2-5. The B-side quarterfinals featured Hauck ousting Mike Green 5-2 and Johnson finishing off Larry Miller 5-2. Johnson survived the semifinals by clipping Hauck 5-4, and he continued his hot hand in the B-side finals over Stortzum 5-1 to get a crack at Parke in the finals. Johnson appeared to be on cruise control in the finals after whitewashing Parke 5-0 in the first set, but Parke recovered nicely in the deciding set to claim the title by a 5-3 margin. Results: 1st Larry Parke 2nd Josh Johnson 3rd Max Stortzum...

Souquet Versus Alcano Redux ar World 8-Ball There are only two billiard players left on the playing field in Fujairah at the Damas World 8-Ball Championship and yes, we have seen this show before. Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines will meet Ralf Souquet of Germany to determine the next 8-ball champion of the world. These two know each other very well. They met in the world 9-ball finals less than two years ago to fight for that crown, and it was Alcano who claimed the day. Souquet is determined to prevent history from repeating itself. He felt the pressure of the fans in Manila and knows that factor will not be so overwhelming here in the UAE. And we are not playing the Philippine national pastime for rotational pool. Says Souquet, “It is a different discipline, eight-ball, and strategy plays a larger role.” While Alcano declined an interview, his confidence is obvious. He is the defending champion of this event and is undefeated this week, while Souquet lost his first match of the tournament to Jeff De Luna. Alcano is very relaxed and has been all week. He seems to be having fun at the tables, and his total lack of nerves must be of some concern to all who face him...

Garcia Wins Puerto Rico 9-Ball Classic With a star-studded field of Puerto Rican and Caribbean-International Pool-Billiard champions, one could only have expected excellent performances during the 1st Palo Viejo - Puerto Rico 9-Ball Classic. Players and fans from the Island were treated to excellent matches between the locals and those from abroad. The field was composed of 3 players from Aruba, 2 from Curacao, 1 from Bonaire, 1 from Jamaica, and 1 player from Guyana currently living in Europe, plus 27 Puerto Rican players that rounded up the Field. Unfortunately nine (9) players from Peru, four (4) players from St. Marten, and one (1) player from Jamaica were denied visas to enter Puerto Rico. Their participation would have made this event a bit more interesting. Day one of the tournament saw four (4) international players survive the first two rounds of the Event. These were Danny Gokhul from Guyana, Arie Jansen from Aruba, Sugar Ray Soleana from Bonaire (Bonaire Champion), and Ditto Acosta from Aruba (2002 Pan-American 9 Ball Champion). Ransley Tromp from Aruba did not fare well against Edwin Garcia (Puerto Rico) falling by score of 9-3 while Aaron Goodwin from Jamaica...

Eight Men Remain on Quest for World Title in Fujairah With two rounds of play completed on Wednesday in the Damas World 8-Ball Championship the original field of 63 men and 1 woman has been reduced to only eight. Wednesday was filled with surprises and drama as many matches went down to the final rack. The crowds here had picked a favorite long before the day began. Jasmin Ouschan, the lone female in the field, had won the affection and respect of the fans with the power of her cue and her easy smile. Her match with Marcus Weston of Germany was followed by every eye in the room and Weston could feel the pressure of the crowd as they urged on his opponent. It appeared that Ouschan would fulfill the wishes of her fans as she led the match by a two-game margin for most of the contest. Indeed, she got to the hill first and stood at 9-7 in the race to ten. But then her break deserted her. Weston capitalized on this turn of events and won three racks running to claim the day and progress. Many great players were ushered to the exits Wednesday. Former Champion Chia-Ching Wu (TPE) fell to international newcomer Alan Cuartero (PHI) in the first round of the day. Konsatntin Stepanov (RUS)...

WPBA to Keep Stats on Players Player Scorecards for each Match will Provide Valuable Statistical Information Thousand Oaks, CA – The Women's Professional Billiards Association's (WPBA's) 2008 Season marks the first full year that its players will use scorecards to produce accurate stats of their matches and tournaments. First used at the 2007 WPBA Tour Championships, the new scorecards include information such as lags won, balls on break, break and runs as well as games won on break. The 2008 San Diego Classic introduced players to the new scorecards and each player kept track of the stats for their match. Kristi Carter – WPBA Board Member and the person responsible for collating the stats from each tournament, feels the benefit to the players is immeasurable, “To be considered an upper-echelon sport, statistics need to be kept that are in depth and reliable. They are a major component to getting mainstream media coverage and it is a goal to position the WPBA as a viable and recognized professional sport. As players and fans, you will have the opportunity to track individual players’ performances, see how they pair against other players, and where they...
