Atwell Takes Come-From-Behind Victory
Pechauer All-American Tour / Portland, OR

Down 5-1 early in the final match against hot seat occupant Dan Louie, Glen Atwell came back to win the final 6 games to capture the $1,500-added Pechauer All-American Tour stop in Portland, OR, at the Nite Hawk. The event drew 48 players the weekend of April 12-13.
Louie easily captured the hot seat by defeating Damien Rebman 9-3, while Atwell started the tournament’s final day on the one-loss side of the bracket with a 9-0 shut-out victory over Jeff Heath. He went on to best Jessie Allred 9-7 and then deposited Bob Zack into a fifth-place tie with a 9-6 win. Now in full stride, Atwell advanced to the quarterfinals and played a close match with Allan Hanson, winning 9-7. In the semifinals Atwell took a 9-5 victory over Rebman. The final match was a close one at first, but when the score was knotted at 5 apiece, Louie took a 7-5 lead before Atwell settled in to capture the last 6 games for the victory.

BCA Hall of Fame Names Hopkins and Fleming
Pool Genius Versed in Many Games Voted Among Greatest Players;
Statistician and Video Pioneer Recognized for Meritorious Service
BROOMFIELD, Colo., April 14, 2008 — Allen Hopkins, a versatile player who won major championships in several cue disciplines, and Pat Fleming, the creator of a massive video archive documenting two generations of great pool players, will be inducted into the Billiard Congress of America’s Hall of Fame in a ceremony set for June 12 at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Hopkins, 56, a two-time winner of the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship as well as major events in 10-ball, straight pool, and one-pocket, will be inducted into the Hall’s Greatest Players wing. Fleming, 59, owner of Accu-Stats Video Productions, will be enshrined in the Hall’s Meritorious Service wing.
The ceremony will take place at 9 p.m., June 12, during the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships at the Charlotte Convention Center.

IPT Announces Reyes and Murphy as Contestants
The International Pool Tour announces that living pool legend Efren Reyes will compete against rising star Austin Murphy on April 29th, 2008. The IPT Ultimate 8-Ball “Viewers Choice” challenge match called on pool and billiards fans world wide to pick the players for this next free live broadcast. The fans responded with a massive number of votes. Their voice determined that the match would put the teenager Austin Murphy in a position to prove himself as a professional against the game’s living legend Efren Reyes. All billiard fans can watch this live broadcast absolutely free on www.internationalpooltour.com (http://www.internationalpooltour.com/). The feature match in the IPT Ultimate 8-Ball match will be under the grueling IPT conditions of tight pockets (courtesy of Diamond Billiard Products) and slow-nap cloth made by Gorina.

Laha and Sinkhorn Take State Billiard Title Events

Rick Beams and Chris Duncan hosted their first annual Kentucky State Championships in 9-ball and 8-ball at their Paradise Billiards Café in Bardstown, KY. This April 12-13 event was restricted to Kentucky residents—but no pros allowed. Played on 8-foot Gold Crowns, the tournament was well-received with 60 total entries, with Duke Laha and Donnie Sinkhorn winning their respective divisions.
The 9-ball division saw a match-up of pre-tournament favorites in the winners’ semifinal. “New York Dave” Grau dropped a 7-0 bomb on David Rice to advance, while the other semi saw Duke Laha move on 7-3 over Gregg Pagulayan (the world-renowned Alex’s uncle). That defeat inspired Gregg as he then eliminated Rice and then knocked out 13-year-old straight-shooting future pro Landon Shuffett by a 7-4 count.
The winners’-side final pitted Laha against Grau, and helped by two 9 balls on the break, Laha took the hot seat at 7-4 while Grau went left to play Pagulayan. Gregg kept his underdog bid going with another win. In the finals, he needed to defeat Laha twice to win it all. A little-known fact...

Chen in Command at Billiard Tour Stop
Fast Eddie’s Olhausen 9-Ball Tour / Lubbock, TX

Born in Taiwan, Jui Lung Chen may still be learning how to speak English, but he showed a field of 30 at Fast Eddie’s in Lubbock, TX, that he knew how to use english at a pool table. He knocked Gordon Van Der Veer over to the one-loss bracket with a 9-4 win early on the final day and then defeated him again in the final match 9-6 to capture the first-place prize on the Fast Eddie’s Olhausen 9-Ball Tour stop April 12-13.
As Chen was busy defeating Van Der Veer the first time Sunday, Robert Newkirk was sending Eric Aicimena to the one-loss side with a 9-5 win. Chen then bested Newkirk 9-5 to capture the hot seat. On the west side of the chart, Van Der Veer was staging a comeback and moved into the quarterfinal match against Pat Soto, whom he handily defeated 7-2. Newkirk, fresh off his loss to Chen, was all too willing to put up a fight against Van Der Veer in the semis but came out on the wrong end of a hill-hill battle. Appleton Aces Eurotour Italy Stop

Darren Appleton scored a huge win at the Eurotour Italy Open this past weekend, besting a field of 242 to take first place over Bruno Muratore. The Italy Open was hosted by the Holiday Inn Resort in Castel Volurno.
With over 30 countries represented at this event, it was anybody’s guess who would be the ultimate winner, but Appleton worked his way through the one-loss side, taking wins over fellow Brits Imran Majid in the quarterfinals and Mark Gray in the semifinals. Appleton’s opponent in the finals was Muratore, an Italian player who won the Malaga, Spain, Eurotour stop last year. But this wasn’t to be Muratore’s day, as Appleton played perfect pool to be able to win the match 9-2.
